What to do after you've been in an accident.

In 2005, there were over 6 million traffic crashes reported to the police in the United States. Add to this number all the accidents that were never reported and this adds up to a lot of accidents. You consider yourself a good driver, and although you do your best to drive responsibly, it's still a good idea to know what to do just in case you join the millions of people involved in car accidents every year.
The most important consideration is the safety of you and the others involved in the accident. Call 911 first and get help on the way. While waiting be very careful to not move any of the injured unless there is danger for greater injury by leaving the person where he or she is.

Do not leave the scene of the accident even if you initially believe you were at fault. In Florida the penalties if convicted of hit and run are severe.
Do not volunteer any information, make comments regarding the accident, or sign any documents other than traffic tickets and official traffic reports. During the initial investigation of the accident do not offer your interpretation of what happened. Simply stay calm, and tell the truth when asked specific questions from the Police. Do not offer to pay for damages, or admit fault in any way. Every case is different, and until all the facts are known, admitting your part in causing the accident can only make matters worse in the long run.

Gather the names and addresses of everyone involved with the accident including witnesses. It may not be possible to locate the witnesses to the accident later if you do not record it right away.

Contact your insurance company within 24 hours to make a claim. Provide only the facts of the accident to the insurance company representative. Do not sign any documents or make any tape recorded statements at this time.

If you have any injuries, no matter how minor they seem at the time, seek medical attention. A slight tingling sensation in your fingers, dizziness, dry mouth, head aches or muscle strain can be symptoms of what could be a long-term injury. Make certain the doctor fully understands your condition.

Contact an experienced accident attorney immediately after the accident to explain your rights and discuss your options with you..
